FREE hosts a variety of classes that enhance a student’s competence and confidence in working with the developmentally disabled and mentally challenged population. Most importantly, it is the Education and Professional Development Department’s mission to ensure that all students have the skills necessary to make a difference in the lives of those that they serve.

Adult CPR/AED
Would you like the ability to save someone’s life in an emergency? Have you ever wondered what you would do if a friend or family member stopped breathing? This informative class will teach you life saving skills including what to do for a conscious/unconscious choking victim, how to care for a heart attack victim, how to give Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

First Aid Training
Do you know what to do if someone suffers a sudden stroke? Or how to help someone who has just been burned by a chemical? Or how you should help someone who has been bitten by a snake, dog, spider, or tick? In this comprehensive training students will learn how to give first aid care in specific situations. Students will learn about what care to give for wounds, burns, and muscle, bone, and joint injuries. Students will also learn about sudden injuries including embedded objects in the skin, head neck and back injuries as well as other injuries. The class will also cover sudden illnesses including fainting, seizures, stroke, diabetic emergencies, asthma, allergic reactions, and other sudden illnesses.

Infant/Child CPR/AED
Does your agency/company serve children or infants? Do you have young children at home? What would you do if one of them stopped breathing? This class is specifically geared towards what actions to take if a child or infant has a respiratory or cardiac emergency. Students will learn how to give a child or infant Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, what to do when a child is choking, and when and how to use an AED on a child.

*Note- All CPR/AED/First Aid classes are taught by American Red Cross Certified Instructors*

Defensive Driving
Would you like to get a 10 percent discount on your car insurance? Would you like to reduce up to 4 points off your driver’s license? This six hour course will teach you defensive driving strategies to help you avoid accidents and become a safer driver. By completing the class students will be eligible for a 10 percent discount on their car insurance, or a point reduction of up to 4 points off their license.

Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention (SCIP R)
Does your agency/company serve the developmentally disabled population? Do your clients have intense behavioral challenges? This OPWDD certified course teaches students to use a proactive approach when handling crisis situations. The class encourages students to use proactive measures to prevent clients from having a behavioral challenge. The class also teaches physical techniques (safe for the client and for the staff member) to be used when a client is having a behavioral challenge. (This class is taught by NYS OPWDD certified SCIP instructors)

Approved Medication Administration Personnel (AMAP) Training
Does the population your agency serves need assistance with taking their medications? Do you need your staff to be confident in dispensing medications to the clients you serve? This OPWDD certified course will teach students everything necessary to administer medication. It will cover different medications; when to administer them, how to administer them, and what the possible risks and side effects are. The class will also teach students to understand prescriptions and how to administer medications based on Doctors Orders. (This class will be taught by a Registered Nurse)
